We all need more culture in our lives – but most of us draw the line when it comes to mould, mildew and other symptoms of dampness in our home. Mould not only looks unpleasant, it also causes common health problems such as asthma, eczema and other allergies. It can arise from things like leaking pipes, rising damp, rain seeping through from outside, and even drying laundry. Let’s look at how to banish mould for good.
1. Getting rid of existing mould
This is done relatively easily using everyday household bleach or bleach spray.
- Mix one part bleach to three parts water in a bucket
- Scrub the mouldy area thoroughly with a stiff, bristly brush to remove it
- Rinse and dry!
2. Prevent mould from developing
Once you’ve cleaned existing areas, it’s time to unleash the next phase of your war on mould (clue: it’s all about keeping dampness under control).
- Use an anti-mould spray and/or anti-mildew paint on high-risk areas like windows
- Use dehumidifiers to suck moisture out of the air
- Ensure that your home has good insulation
