Bathroom plumbing advice

From clogged-up showers to toilets that won't flush, there are plenty of things that can go wrong with your bathroom plumbing. And while our expert engineers are always ready to tackle a disaster, we also know that it's far better to know how to prevent one in the first place. So if you want to maintain your drains and keep your pipes in peak condition, just follow our simple bathroom plumbing advice.

1. Keep your drains healthy and clog-free

Over time, the drains in your bathroom can start to get clogged up with debris. If left unchecked, this debris can eventually become a full-on blockage. Luckily, you can easily give your drains a detox. Tip a small amount of baking soda down the plughole, and then follow it with a cup of white vinegar. The vinegar and baking soda will react together, bubbling away to help break down any debris that might be caught in the drain. Once it's finished bubbling, you can flush the solution through with warm water. Alternatively, you can dissolve a cup full of soda crystals in some boiling water, and then pour this down the plughole. You can use either of these methods for baths, sinks and showers. But remember: if you want to keep your drains as healthy and clear as possible, you'll need to give them regular attention. So use one of these methods two or three times a year to keep your bathroom plumbing running freely.

2. Get a sparkling shower-head

If you're having trouble keeping your shower clean – and especially if you live in a hard-water area – take off the shower-head and leave it to soak in a bowl of white vinegar overnight. The next day, you should find it much easier to scrub off any flaking limescale deposits. Just remember to let the water run for a bit after you reattach it, to help rinse away any leftover vinegar.
