Winter Plumbing Top Tips
Top Winter tips for your plumbing
You may be experiencing frozen pipes due to the adverse weather conditions across the country. The thawing of frozen pipes is not covered by HomeCare agreements, but there are simple things you can do to safely restore flow to your pipework:
Help avoid frozen or burst pipes this Winter:
• Cover tanks and interior and exterior plumbing with pipe lagging.
This is one of the most efficient ways to protect your pipes this winter from bursting or freezing. This works by wrapping insulating materials around the pipes and is particularly effective for those domestic interior pipes located in exposed and unheated areas of the home. These exposed pipes are at greater risk of freezing so the more insulated they are, the better protected they’ll be.
Take advantage of our special Winter pipe lagging offer. Receive 20 metres of pipe lagging for £90 (incl. VAT) plus FREE installation* if you book before 1st October 2012. Simply call us on 0800 084 1143 to find out more and book before the Winter freeze.
• Wrap heat tape around exposed pipes and ensure your loft insulation is in good condition.
• Make sure you heat your home while you’re away - We recommend putting your central heating on a timer for a few hours each day at 15°C.
• Circulate warm air around your home to help prevent pipes located in the wall from freezing - Keep kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors open when you can and cover any small gaps in the walls.
• Regularly check your water pressure during the winter months. The first sign of a frozen pipe is restricted water flow.
• Check that you can turn off your stop cock in a burst pipe emergency (usually located under the kitchen sink).
How to help thaw frozen water pipes:
The key is to hold concentrated heat against the frozen pipe - Below are some safe ways to help you do this.
• Apply a hot water bottle to the pipe.
• Wrap the frozen pipe in hot towels.
• Use an electric hair dryer or heat lamp in short bursts and held at a distance.
• Open loft hatches to let warm air circulate if you suspect pipes and tanks may have frozen.
Please be careful not to use a naked flame near the pipes or apply constant, intense heat
To stop your pipes from freezing again, the most effective long term solution is to insulate any exposed and unprotected pipework with pipe lagging.
* This offer ends and must be booked by 1st October 2012. The cost of £90 is inclusive of VAT. The diameter of the pipework is restricted to a maximum of 22mm.
