Don’t slip up – let Dyno-Rod manage your FOGs

Prevention – not cure

If you run a catering establishment or commercial kitchen, then you’ll know that putting fats, oils or grease (FOGs) down the drain can be a costly mistake which could have very nasty consequences for your business. Bad smells, the risk of rodent infestation and lost customers due to drain problems, not to mention expensive repairs and potential prosecution under the Food Safety Act for health issues.

Taking measures to prevent FOG related blockages at source is a much more cost effective way of looking after your businesses drains and could save you valuable time and money in the long run. As you would expect in the average domestic household, it is perfectly normal for a small amount of grease to end up down the drain. This is dealt with by microorganisms in the septic tank which will slowly break it down so it shouldn’t cause too many problems. However large amounts of fat, oils and grease from restaurants and other catering establishments can quickly build up and cause blockages which could require costly repairs. In order to avoid blockages and the unpleasantness that goes with them, Dyno-Rod recommends that grease traps are installed in all catering establishments.

So what exactly is a grease trap?

A grease trap is a container designed to intercept FOG’s before they reach the wastewater system, therefore preventing build up and potential blockages. The trap sits between the sink in the establishments’ kitchen and the main sewer and can be located above ground – in the kitchen or outside the building – or underground as an integral part of the drainage system, accessed via manholes. Grease traps come in a variety of materials and sizes so ask your local Dyno-Rod engineer for advice and recommendations on the best unit for your business. They will also be able to supply your grease trap, complying with the British Standard BS EN 1825 – as well as fitting it and providing the ongoing management it requires.

Already got a grease trap?

If you already have a grease trap installed then you still need to manage the grease it catches or you may end up with unpleasant odours in your kitchens. You’ll find that traditional prevention methods don’t really work – hot water flushes simply liquefy and disperse the grease, which will solidify again when cool. Using chemicals is bad for the environment and your drains. And anyway, these methods do not eliminate the long term problem, eventually ending up with the inevitable, costly de-sludging of the grease trap and cleaning of the drainage system. Not a job for the faint hearted! For a cost effective solution to grease problems in catering establishments, Dyno-Rod recommend Bioflo.

What is Bioflo?

Bioflo is an ongoing maintenance system that helps to reduce the frequency of grease trap cleaning and keeps the drainage system free from blockages. Its carefully formulated liquid blend of bacterial cultures has been proven to reduce the thickness of fat within the grease trap. Unlike detergents that simply push grease into the main sewer, Bioflo quickly and naturally degrades organic waste. Bioflo is safe, natural and environmentally friendly.

How does it work?

The Bioflo treatment is fully automatic and is controlled by a small, wall mounted pump which ensures that a measured dose of bacteria is discharged daily for maximum effect. The process is safe and totally natural. The micro-organisms within the solution are non-toxic, non-corrosive and harmless to aquatic life.
